When your body’s temperature decreases every night to allow you to sleep well, it’s to be in vain when your mattress and sheets aren’t able to hold that moisture and heat effectively. Cooling sheets can perform the heavy lifting and keep increasing temperatures under control to allow you to rest comfortably. The top cooling sheets will provide ample airflow and remove moisture from your body, keeping your body at a healthy temperature.
Katie Elks, design director at Brooklinen, states, “Certain fabrics or fibers are cooler or more breathable than others.” In addition, she explains it is true that “linen and cotton sheets are both breathable and more moisture-wicking than other fibers,” bamboo, eucalyptus, and silk are all worthy candidates.
We’ve tested 209 sheets up to this point at our Lab and over the long term at home. To find out the most effective cooling sheets, we compared them on their ability to breathe, moisture management, and cooling capabilities. We also spoke with Elks about what consumers need to know when searching for the top cooling sheets to combat the heat. Southern heat.
Best Overall Cooling Sheets
Olive + Crate Eucalyptus Tencel Fiber Sheet Set
They are some of the softest and smoothest we’ve ever felt. Made from eucalyptus-derived Tencel (a semi-synthetic fiber known for its temperature-regulating properties that is made by dissolving wood pulp in a chemical solvent), they are cool to the touch and do an excellent job of wicking moisture away from the skin’s surface. We also adore the silky soft feel of sateen fabric, but users who want the feeling of linen or cotton may want to reconsider their options.
There was some reduction in size after our first washing; we didn’t see any pilling or fade in color. As promised, Olive +Crate’s sheets are softer and soft with each wash. However, we noticed they took longer to dry than standard cotton sheets. The fitted sheets included in this set are double stitched in areas of high stress, and the large-sized pockets are large enough to hold the majority of mattresses. However, over time and after washing repeatedly, the seams started to break on one of the pillows. If you’re on the side of the fence, The sheets include a 60-day sleeping trial, which means you can be patient and decide.
Best Budget Cooling Sheets
Better Homes & Gardens Washed Cotton Percale Sheet Set
Percale sheets are an excellent choice for those who sleep hot because they are breathable and can drape comfortably over the body instead of clinging to it. Better Homes & Gardens’ cotton percale sheets are lightweight, soft, and airy. They are washed with water to provide soft hands, but we found that, while light and breathable, they may feel a bit rough.
At first, the sheets were slightly loose. And although they were washed thoroughly, they were still soft and had some shrinkage. But, this decrease in shrinkage is excellent as it allows the sheets to fit into the bed more comfortably. The set has an unflattering sheet, fitted sheets, and two pillowcases. There are eight colors to pick from, including gray, green, and blue. Remember that if you love bright colors for your room, you’ll never see them on this site. Better Homes & Gardens is part of Southern Living’s parent company, Dotdash Meredith.

As you would expect from cotton sheets, this one is remarkably comfortable to breathe. They’re cool and comfortable to feel, which kept us calm but not freezing all night. Although the sheets have an icy feel, they’re incredibly soft. It’s similar to sleeping in a luxurious cotton button-down shirt, which gets more soft with each wash. After running through the washing process, the sheets were slightly weaker on the other hand. However, they should be removed from the dryer immediately as a best practice to avoid wrinkles.

The sheets can be washed in the machine and, just as we’d hoped for using percale, the sheets became softer as they were cleansed. Although there is some shrinkage, they are very comfortable to sleep on, and we could see that this sheet was not filled with wrinkles from dryers. This is an enormous advantage for percale sheets. The fitted sheet can accommodate mattresses up to 16 inches deep in addition to the standard choices of white, ivory flax, and ivory; the company provides a variety of colors, such as Light Fog, Rich Steel, and Vintage Peony. Our Testing Process
We’ve tested 209 different sheets for beds in our Labs and homes. In the process, we’ve been looking at specific elements that make some sheets more relaxed. When we conducted our Lab tests, the sheets were all scrutinized visually, used to create the bed, and washed by the manufacturer’s guidelines. While testing, we recorded whether the sheets exhibited the sensation of cool-to-the-touch, and if they did, they remained so after being laid on them for 5 minutes. When the Lab tests were completed, we returned the top-scoring sets and received feedback on how the sheets performed in time and whether they kept us calm after repeated use. We are conducting the long-term testing of many sheets and will update this post with any new information when we have the data.
Tips for Choosing the Right Cooling Sheets
“Sheets made of 100 percent cotton, especially a plain weave like percale, offer a crisp and cool feel for hot sleepers,” says Katie Elks, the director of design for Brooklinen. If you are looking for sheets made of cotton, Elks says, “Look for high-quality, long-staple cotton fibers as they will have a softer hand feel and better durability.”
And while cotton is everyone’s first stop for cooling sheets, materials like Tencel lyocell (which is typically derived from eucalyptus), bamboo, and silk are also worthy of any shortlist as they, too, are excellent thermo-regulators that are breathable and moisture-wicking–excellent choices for anyone who sleeps hot.
Any person shopping for sheets will likely come across thread count statistics often. In simple terms, thread count is the amount of horizontal and vertical threads within a square centimeter of material. While thread count may affect the durability and feel of the fabric, it’s certainly not the end-all-be-all.
Having a higher count of threads is a sign of superior quality. However, as Elks says, you might receive the goods you bargained (or purchased) for. “Across the bedding industry, thread count can easily be inflated by constructing sheets with weak, multi-ply yarns and shorter fibers,” states Elks. “Rather than relying on thread count alone, shoppers should source their bedding by looking at the quality of the fabric and fibers.” However, generally speaking, an increase in thread count signifies a heavier, dense sheet, while one with a lower thread count is more airy and light.
In a few ways, the term “cooling” technology is an oxymoron for sheets. In most instances, the cooling technology is simply the natural cooling characteristics of the fabric itself.
For instance, Mulberry Park Silks’ 22 Momme Silk Sheet Set is Our choice for the top silk cooling sheets. The cooling tech is the silk’s inherent thermoregulating properties. In cases like our full sheets for cooling, those from Ole + Crate’s Eucalyptus Sheet Set, The cooling properties are intrinsic to its moisture-wicking capabilities.
In some instances, it could be a genuine technology. For example, although the information appears proprietary, Sheex’s Arctic Aire MAX‘s CoolX Technology claims to employ a moisture-wicking process over its naturally cooling Tencel Lyocell fabric.
Weave and Finish
The weave doesn’t only affect the way a sheet feels. However, the weave may influence the breathability, durability, and appearance. Percale sheets typically have a smooth and matte appearance; sateen weaves provide an incredibly soft and silky feel with a beautiful appearance.
“Our favorite cooling weaves are percale and linen because of their naturally occurring cooling properties and breathability,” Elks says. Elks. “Percale sheets are a fantastic cooling option because of their crisp and cool texture like the hotel bedding. I also suggest sheets for those who sleep hot due to its unique moisture-wicking capabilities.”
More Cooling Sheets to Consider
Parachute Percale Sheet Set: Overall, the sheet was excellent. Although it was not soft, it was quiet, as sheets made of cotton are concerned, and it felt pretty premium, and that’s not even mentioning the fact that it’s high-end. It’s light, comfortable, breathable, and airy. There wasn’t a noticeable temperature drop after laying on it briefly. It was clean without shrinkage and remained in good condition after several months.
Nest Tencel Sheet Set: The sheets have a soft, buttery texture and are cool to the feel, and it retains moisture so you stay cool as you rest. As with most of our Tencel sheets made of lyocell that we’ve reviewed, this one from Nest was a good choice across the categories but failed to pass the test because it split in the middle after five months of use.
Kassatex Linen-Bamboo Set: This bamboo/linen blend sheet has a more pronounced inclination towards linen but not quite as bamboo. Although it’s a bit light and soft, it isn’t quite silky. The sheet scored highly for breathability, texture, and toughness. However, its coarse texture did not make it into our top 12 choices.
