Our Testing Process
We’ve tested 209 different sheets for beds in our Labs and homes. In the process, we’ve been looking at specific elements that make some sheets more relaxed. When we conducted our Lab tests, the sheets were all scrutinized visually, used to create the bed, and washed by the manufacturer’s guidelines. While testing, we recorded whether the sheets exhibited the sensation of cool-to-the-touch, and if they did, they remained so after being laid on them for 5 minutes. When the Lab tests were completed, we returned the top-scoring sets and received feedback on how the sheets performed in time and whether they kept us calm after repeated use. We are conducting the long-term testing of many sheets and will update this post with any new information when we have the data.
Tips for Choosing the Right Cooling Sheets
Material
“Sheets made of 100 percent cotton, especially a plain weave like percale, offer a crisp and cool feel for hot sleepers,” says Katie Elks, the director of design for Brooklinen. If you are looking for sheets made of cotton, Elks says, “Look for high-quality, long-staple cotton fibers as they will have a softer hand feel and better durability.”
And while cotton is everyone’s first stop for cooling sheets, materials like Tencel lyocell (which is typically derived from eucalyptus), bamboo, and silk are also worthy of any shortlist as they, too, are excellent thermo-regulators that are breathable and moisture-wicking–excellent choices for anyone who sleeps hot.
Thread Count
Any person shopping for sheets will likely come across thread count statistics often. In simple terms, thread count is the amount of horizontal and vertical threads within a square centimeter of material. While thread count may affect the durability and feel of the fabric, it’s certainly not the end-all-be-all.
Having a higher count of threads is a sign of superior quality. However, as Elks says, you might receive the goods you bargained (or purchased) for. “Across the bedding industry, thread count can easily be inflated by constructing sheets with weak, multi-ply yarns and shorter fibers,” states Elks. “Rather than relying on thread count alone, shoppers should source their bedding by looking at the quality of the fabric and fibers.” However, generally speaking, an increase in thread count signifies a heavier, dense sheet, while one with a lower thread count is more airy and light.
Cooling Technology
In a few ways, the term “cooling” technology is an oxymoron for sheets. In most instances, the cooling technology is simply the natural cooling characteristics of the fabric itself.

In some instances, it could be a genuine technology. For example, although the information appears proprietary, Sheex’s Arctic Aire MAX‘s CoolX Technology claims to employ a moisture-wicking process over its naturally cooling Tencel Lyocell fabric.
Weave and Finish
The weave doesn’t only affect the way a sheet feels. However, the weave may influence the breathability, durability, and appearance. Percale sheets typically have a smooth and matte appearance; sateen weaves provide an incredibly soft and silky feel with a beautiful appearance.
“Our favorite cooling weaves are percale and linen because of their naturally occurring cooling properties and breathability,” Elks says. Elks. “Percale sheets are a fantastic cooling option because of their crisp and cool texture like the hotel bedding. I also suggest sheets for those who sleep hot due to its unique moisture-wicking capabilities.”
More Cooling Sheets to Consider
Parachute Percale Sheet Set: Overall, the sheet was excellent. Although it was not soft, it was quiet, as sheets made of cotton are concerned, and it felt pretty premium, and that’s not even mentioning the fact that it’s high-end. It’s light, comfortable, breathable, and airy. There wasn’t a noticeable temperature drop after laying on it briefly. It was clean without shrinkage and remained in good condition after several months.
Nest Tencel Sheet Set: The sheets have a soft, buttery texture and are cool to the feel, and it retains moisture so you stay cool as you rest. As with most of our Tencel sheets made of lyocell that we’ve reviewed, this one from Nest was a good choice across the categories but failed to pass the test because it split in the middle after five months of use.
Kassatex Linen-Bamboo Set: This bamboo/linen blend sheet has a more pronounced inclination towards linen but not quite as bamboo. Although it’s a bit light and soft, it isn’t quite silky. The sheet scored highly for breathability, texture, and toughness. However, its coarse texture did not make it into our top 12 choices.
