THIS HOLLYWOOD HILLS HOUSE WAS BUILT SOLELY TO ACCOMMODATE A MASSIVE CHRIS OFILI PAINTING

If you bought a painting that was so large it would not fit on your walls, what would you do? A Hollywood Hills collector went the extreme route and demolished the house to build a brand-new one.

The owner of the property, who is a real estate agent and works in entertainment, was not interested in selling the parcel because of its “incomparable vantage point” over Los Angeles. Instead, he built a modernist aerie of 5,000 square feet with three bedrooms and four bathrooms. It features an indoor-outdoor design that makes the most of the location.

The homeowner met Andre Mellone through a mutual friend, fashion designer Thom Browne.

The owner wanted a home that was clean, minimal, inviting, and warm. Dangaran and Woods both agreed that the biggest challenge they faced was accommodating the owner’s impressive collection without giving it the feel of a clinical museum. Woods said that the ceilings were 12 feet high, making it difficult to design a home that felt human-scaled.” I will not kill something because I’ve seen it before.

“His work enhances the architectural vision.” “”

In the living room, for example, all the furniture is low-slung, and the room is designed around the view. The console, which was made by the New York firm Green River Project to support the custom sofa, was created by Mellone’s father, who himself was a midcentury Brazilian designer. Mellone adds that the room has a number of sentimental elements.

The Eames screen and dresser pair flank the bed in the main bedroom. A Noguchi paper lamp draws the eye up, something a lesser designer would have avoided.

This was about creating a space that had an architectural feel.
